Hidden in the central mountains of Taiwan’s Nantou County (南投縣), Old England Manor (老英格蘭莊園) is a Tudor-style castle hotel in Qingjing, on the road up to Hehuanshan’s summit. I built my whole three-day Nantou County itinerary around staying at this specific hotel because it’s easily one of the most unique and photogenic hotels I’ve ever seen. Who would’ve thought you could find a Gothic clock tower and stone mullion windows straight out of a European estate in Asia? It looks straight out of a fairy tale!

Where Is Old England Manor Located?

Old England Manor sits in Qingjing (also spelled Cingjing 清境) in Nantou County , along Provincial Highway 14A. This is the same road that connects Qingjing to Hehuanshan. I took the high-speed rail to Taichung, where my private driver took me on my three-day tour of Nantou County, covering Sun Moon Lake (日月潭), Hehuanshan (合歡山), and Xitou (溪頭). She’s the same driver I hired earlier in the year to take me on day trips outside of Kaohsiung (高雄) and Maolin’s National Scenic Area (茂林國家風景區).

Since Taiwanese drivers are notorious for not heeding driving rules, especially with all the moped drivers buzzing around, hiring a local private driver is the most convenient way to cover mountain roads without worrying about parking or fatigue after a long drive.

Is Old England Manor Near Hehuanshan?

The manor sits directly on the road up to Wuling (武嶺), Hehuanshan’s highest point reachable by car. It’s the same stretch that passes Qingjing Farm (清境農場) and the Qingjing Skywalk (清境高空觀景步道) on the way up. Drive up, and you can catch sunrise or sunset above the clouds, then be back at the hotel within the hour. However, you don’t have to make the drive to see it. Clouds seep in directly through the rolling mountains in front of the property, so watching from the manor itself is a great option if you’d rather skip the altitude.

The Backstory of Taiwan’s Old England Manor

Old England Manor is the work of the Lo family, built by founder Da-Lo with his brother Xiao-Lo. Lo came from a military background with no formal architecture training and built the concept from the ground up. The Old England opened in 2010, and staff told me it was the first hotel in the area to use this style. Since opening its doors, Old England Manor has become a Small Luxury Hotels of the World property.

A handful of other English-inspired bed and breakfasts, including The Cotswolds Villa, have gone up along the same road since, and the area feels like an Asian version of the Cotswolds in the United Kingdom.

In my observation, Taiwan has a long-running affinity for Western aesthetics, and Old England Manor is one of the more ambitious expressions of it. The execution isn’t perfectly consistent throughout the property, and having Italian and Irish statues sit alongside the English Gothic detailing speaks to me as a kind of reverse Chinoiserie. Most guests probably won’t clock the mismatch, but it was just something I picked up on while walking through the campus.

How Much Does It Cost to Stay at Old England Manor?

Rooms start around NT$29,000–43,200 for the largest suite, with smaller rooms priced lower. Depending on how long your stay is, they also run discount promotions. The rate includes both breakfast and dinner, which is always a plus to save on costs. Like most hotel restaurants, dinner is available to the public not staying at the hotel, and if you paid for it separately, it runs about NT$1,600, which is not unreasonable once you convert it.

What’s Included in the Room Rate?

After checking in, every guest gets a tour of their room, and the first thing I noticed was that staff and housekeeping both remove their shoes before entering guest rooms. It’s typical in Asian households to remove shoes before entering the home, but I’ve never seen this before from staff at a hotel. It certainly reinforced the cleanliness and hygiene of the hotel! The concierge also made a point of highlighting the in-room audio system during the tour, which turned out to be a preview of how much the hotel cares about sound.

When settling in, guests will notice a massive welcome basket of snacks that housekeeping replenishes daily, along with plush slippers, which are standard for Taiwanese hospitality. I, of course, stocked up on them to bring home.

Breakfast is buffet-style, mixing Western and Asian dishes, while dinner seemed to be an Asian interpretation of Western food, offering a choice of chicken, beef, or pork each night. I’m not the biggest fan when restaurants try to specialize in a cuisine that isn’t their own culture, because many times, the ingredients of the location are simply not the same, so the flavor isn’t the same. One night I chose beef, which turned out to be a beef Wellington, and it came out bland. I’d have preferred a straightforward Taiwanese menu to choose from instead. Breakfast was definitely the winner of the two. Since dinner hour runs on a set schedule, the hotel asks that you call or email ahead if you’ll arrive after 5:00 PM, so they know you’re going to miss the dinner hour and can plan around it.

Evening Activity at Old England Manor

After dinner hour is over, staff invite guests to the Shakespeare Music Hall for a nightcap in a hall that centers on the property’s high-end sound system.The hall plays classical music loud enough that it felt more overwhelming than relaxing. Personally, it’s not my scene, since sitting in a closed room made it awkward to leave early. If you’re a self-professed audiophile, though, check it out!

Room Options at Old England Manor

As a boutique hotel, Old England Manor keeps its room count small, giving it the feel of a private retreat rather than a typical hotel. Each of the five suite types, Anthem, Romance, Fantasia, Madrigal, and Plainsong, offers generous sizes and distinct styling rather than following the same configuration. Ranging from 33 to 165 square meters, each room feels like its own wing of a castle rather than a standard hotel room.

During my stay at Old England Manor, I booked the Madrigal Suite, which was quite large, with a king bed and bay window. The bathroom was equally spacious, with strong shower pressure that felt great after a day at altitude on Hehuanshan.

Where to Stay in Qingjing/Cingjing (清境)

If you’re comparing hotels in Qingjing generally, Old England Manor is the priciest, but also the one with the most novelty. Nowhere else in the area has the Gothic architecture and clock tower. There are homestays and B&Bs nearby that have copied the style and offer mountain views at a lower price point, though. For many, that might be enough. Initially, I was debating whether to stay at the cheaper B&Bs, but I figured since I was coming all the way up here, I’d just splurge on the stay.

The Verdict on Old England Manor in Qingjing

It’s worth staying at Old England Manor if you’re interested in the novelty. The architecture and the mountain setting alone make the trip worthwhile. It’s also a good base for chasing sunrise or sunset above the clouds at Hehuanshan. The aesthetic execution is simply a reverse Chinoiserie, and unless you’re a stickler for historical realism, no one would even notice. I’d have preferred more Taiwanese food on the dinner menu, but none of these are a dealbreaker. It’s still one of the more memorable places I’ve stayed in Taiwan, and I’d definitely stay again!
