I went out to photograph street style during my first-ever New York Fashion Week! It’s funny, going to school and being in the city for over ten years now, I was always aware of NYFW since NYC is a fashion capital but never thought twice about it. I have passed by the venues without a care in the world. I’ve never thought much about doing any form of fashion photography because I’ve heard way too many horror stories. That being said, I think I would like to try and shoot at least one runway and backstage show just once in my career to see what it’s like.
For street photography specifically, it’s much less pressure to do. You just need to show up at the main venue (this year it was Spring Studios) during a scheduled show. It’s a great networking opportunity as well to connect with other photographers, influencers, models, and even celebrities. I didn’t realize this when I was researching beforehand, but a lot of the shows are hush-hush, and can’t be found online unless you know the right people. Showing up to the main venue and striking up a conversation usually leads to someone disclosing show information though.
I tried my hand during the fall-winter shows, and boy was it freezing! I had so much fun meeting and interacting with a bunch of the attendees though, and without further adieu, here are some of the looks I captured!
