If you’re planning a trip to San Juan and looking for a hotel that blends history, beachside relaxation, and proximity to San Juan’s cultural highlights, the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel is a renowned beachfront property in Puerto Rico that blends historical charm with resort-style amenities. Situated on Isla Verde Beach, it offers guests a mix of luxury and cultural experiences.
As a travel photographer and content creator, I stayed here during a visit to the island as part of a partnership, and wanted to share more about the experience. From the design and amenities to a few details that stood out during my time on the property.

Established in 1958 as the San Juan Intercontinental Hotel, the property has evolved into a member of the Historic Hotels of America. Managed by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts since 2020, it retains its iconic Mid-Century Modern architecture, highlighted by a stunning hand-blown Czech glass chandelier in the lobby. It’s impossible to miss and literally the first thing you see walking into the lobby! The hotel is celebrated for its lively ambiance, hosting events like Miss Universe Puerto Rico and parties for artists such as Ivy Queen.
The hotel functions as a comprehensive resort, providing guests with a variety of amenities:
Every morning, I started at Caña, where you can choose between a breakfast buffet or an à la carte menu. Dinner at Caña featured a refreshed menu by renowned Puerto Rican chef José Enrique, adding some local culinary flair to the experience.
The property also offers a diverse culinary scene, giving you multiple ways to enjoy food and drinks without ever leaving the hotel:
I stayed in one of the Poolside Villa Rooms, nestled beside the hotel’s lush gardens and just steps from the Well & Being pool. Fairmont El San Juan designed these rooms to inspire island-style relaxation, and the location truly delivers on that promise. It was peaceful, scenic, and easy to slip right into vacation mode.
The room offers a private balcony, and the hotel includes thoughtful touches inside, like Le Labo Rose 31-scented amenities, that create a more luxurious experience. If privacy matters to you, keep in mind that the windows face a main walkway by the pool, so anyone passing by can see in unless you fully draw the curtains.
The Fairmont El San Juan offers a unique blend of historical significance, beachfront access, and a lively atmosphere. Its rich legacy and array of amenities make it an attractive option for travelers seeking both relaxation and entertainment.
However, during my stay, I noticed areas that could benefit from updates to align with the luxury standards typically associated with the Fairmont brand. Some parts of the property, including hallways and certain room features, showed signs of wear and could use maintenance. Additionally, the clientele leaned more towards those who prefer all-inclusive or cruise-style vacations, which may not match everyone’s expectations for a high-end resort.
Also during my visit, the hotel hosted some high-profile events, including Miss Universe Puerto Rico and a launch party for reggaeton queen Ivy Queen. What are the chances one of Puerto Rico’s biggest stars was right in front of me as I ate my guac and chips? While these events are cool, and as much as I love to party, they’re not typically what you’d expect at a 5-star luxury hotel.
Despite these observations, the staff were consistently professional and accommodating, enhancing the overall experience. For travelers who prioritize vibrant nightlife, beach access, and a resort with historical charm, the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel could be a fitting choice. However, if you’re seeking a more traditional luxury experience with meticulous attention to detail, you might find certain aspects of the hotel falling short.
Q: Is the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel all-inclusive?
A: No, the hotel operates on a pay-as-you-go basis, with meals, drinks, and other amenities available at additional costs.
