Even if you’ve never been to Washington DC in spring, you’ve seen the photos. The perimeter of Tidal Basin is lined with cherry blossoms, and the Jefferson Memorial is floating behind a curtain of fluffy, pale pink. It’s one of the most iconic seasonal scenes in the country. I’ve visited DC specifically for cherry blossom season twice, in 2019 and 2023, and both times I planned my trip around peak bloom. Here’s everything you need to know to do the same.
Peak bloom in Washington DC typically falls between the last week of March and the first week of April. The peak bloom date is defined and determined when 70% of the Yoshino Cherry blossoms around Tidal Basin are open. However, predicting the exact date of peak bloom can be challenging, as it is dependent on weather conditions. NPS horticulturists monitor the bud development and report the status of the blossoms every day on their social media channels โ that’s the most reliable real-time source for DC timing.
One of the things that makes the cherry blossom season so special is the unpredictable length of the blooming period. The Yoshino trees typically bloom only for three to five days. There’s no fixed date. Some years, peak bloom lands in late March, other years it pushes into early April. Cool, calm weather can extend the bloom slightly; a rainy or windy stretch can end it abruptly. A late cold snap can delay or suppress blooming entirely, making it a true test of Mother Nature’s whims. The only way to time it accurately is to watch NPS forecasts in the two to three weeks leading up to your trip.
Every year, NPS releases an official peak bloom prediction, usually in late February or early March. As of this writing, NPS has not yet released its 2026 prediction, which is running uncharacteristically late โ most likely due to the heavy snowfall this winter. Last year’s peak was announced as March 28โ31. I’ll update this section as soon as the official forecast drops.
If you’re also planning to catch cherry blossoms in New York City this spring, the DC announcement is the earliest signal you have for NYC timing, too. NYC blooms typically follow about two to three weeks after DC’s peak. So once NPS announces, you can start counting forward.

According to the National Park Service, Japan gifted the famous cherry trees to Washington DC in 1912 to commemorate the friendship between the two nations. Since then, the blooming of these trees has become a cherished tradition and is one of the most anticipated seasonal events in the country to photograph.
What most people don’t know is that this same history extends beyond DC. New York City received a separate gift of 3,020 cherry trees, planted in what is now Sakura Park in Morningside Heights. Salt Lake City has its own chapter of this story, too. Japan gifted cherry trees to Utah following WWII, though unlike the East Coast gifts, which were Yoshino trees, Utah received Kwanzan cherry blossoms.

The Tidal Basin is the heart of DC cherry blossom season. The 1.5-mile loop puts you directly under the trees with the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument as your backdrop โ plan to spend at least a couple of hours here!
If you want any chance of clean compositions, arrive at or before sunrise. Although peak bloom at the Tidal Basin is one of the most crowded events in DC all year. There are crowds at all hours. The pastel colored skies complementing the flowers are worth the early alarm regardless. Additionally, if you’re spending more than a day in DC, the National Cherry Blossom Festival runs concurrently with peak bloom season and includes cultural events and activities across the city.

DC during cherry blossom season is in high demand across the board, so book as early as possible. This city, in general, is expensive. On my last visit, I stayed at CitizenM Washington DC Capitol Hotel, and was genuinely impressed with the price point. The location puts you within walking distance of major attractions, the rooms are compact but comfortable, and the breakfast buffet comes with unlimited coffee.
