New York City’s elevated train lines in the outer boroughs offer some of the most scenic NYC subway stations you’ll ever encounter. While many commuters may be focused on their destinations, photographers and urban explorers know that these above-ground gems provide a unique perspective on the city’s vibrant neighborhoods.
In this article, I’ll show you the city’s most photogenic elevated stations, revealing the often-overlooked vantage points that make these NYC subway stops not just transit hubs, but prime locations for capturing the essence of the Big Apple.
Crossing the East River, the Manhattan Bridge offers an unparalleled view of the Lower Manhattan skyline. As your train emerges from the tunnel, you’re treated to a sweeping panorama that captures the essence of New York City’s iconic waterfront. To see this view hop on one of the four trains mentioned in either direction between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
While the top platform is one of the best Queens photography spots, the real magic happens while riding the Manhattan-bound N or W train from 39th Ave in Astoria. As the train rounds the curve, a breathtaking urban landscape unfolds, framed by industrial buildings and the distant Manhattan skyline. Stand in one of the last cars so you can include the front of the train in the frame.
Perched high above the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, this station boasts the best scenic view of Lower Manhattan. Stand on the Brooklyn-bound side, especially during golden hour when the setting sun creates a mesmerizing reflection off of 1 World Trade Center.
Sitting on the train for an hour can be mind-numbing, but as you approach Brighton Beach on the Q train, keep your eyes peeled. The colorful rides of Luna Park gradually come into view, offering a nostalgic glimpse of this beloved amusement area.
For the best experience, plan your visit for a Friday night in the summer, arriving just before sunset. Coney Island transforms into the perfect Brooklyn photography spot between June through early September. The best part? Every Friday night there’s a spectacular fireworks display.
Crossing between Brooklyn and Manhattan, the Williamsburg Bridge offers a cool industrial charm made obvious with a telephoto lens.
