Tony Award nominee Melissa Errico brought her 10th year of Sondheim performances to 54 Below with a sold-out cabaret show over the weekend that showcased why she’s become synonymous with the late composer’s work. The Broadway veteran, known for roles in My Fair Lady, Les Misérables, and Dracula, performed alongside jazz luminary Bruce Harris on trumpet, whom she calls her “found family.” Pianist Tedd Firth and bassist David Fink completed the intimate quartet.
Errico’s relationship with Sondheim’s catalog runs deep. She worked directly with the composer on Sunday in the Park with George and performed as the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods. Her dedication has already produced two Sondheim albums, with a third in development.
The evening felt particularly special with Errico’s children and parents in the audience. Entertainment runs in her family lineage, tracing back to ancestors who performed in the Ziegfeld Follies. 54 Below’s intimate setting, where every seat sits within a few feet of the stage, provided the perfect backdrop for Errico’s nuanced interpretations of Sondheim’s complex compositions. Her decade-long commitment to performing his work at the venue continues to draw devoted audiences to Broadway’s beloved cabaret space.
