For years, Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon held the top spot on my afternoon tea list in New York City. Tucked inside a Georgian brownstone between Union Square and Gramercy Park, it delivers what most Manhattan tea services don’t deliver on: non-stale food, real clotted cream, warm scones, and rooms that are every colorful maximalist’s dream.
I’ve sampled my way through countless afternoon tea services across New York City, and most have been disappointing if I’m being honest, but Lady Mendl’s is old reliable for me. I first ate here pre-pandemic, and then rediscovered this sport last year, so join me as I take you to one of my favorite afternoon tea spots in New York City!

Lady Mendl’s sits in a discreet Georgian brownstone next to both Union Square and Gramercy Park. The building sets the tone before you even sit down. Imagine yourself transported to a bygone era of refined elegance, where every corner whispers stories of New York’s sophisticated past! The whimsical interiors channel Gilded Age New York — where every corner feels theatrical. While you don’t need to dress up, the whimsical interiors might just inspire you to channel your inner socialite.

Lady Mendl’s structures its service as a proper five-course affair.
The meal opens with a warm soup course. I had a pumpkin or butternut squash blend on my first visit, and a potato preparation more recently. Both were excellent. This warm start sets the perfect tone for the tea service to follow.
Then, a parade of finger sandwiches follows. Some are the classics, like smoked salmon, and there more inventive pairings like butternut squash with goat cheese crostini. The unexpected flavor combinations are always a nice surprise.
This is the heart of an afternoon tea service, and my favorite part. Scones arrive warm from the oven, served with generous dollops of clotted cream and jam that transport you straight to the English countryside. For anyone who has eaten at other afternoon tea services in Manhattan that skip this detail, it’s a relief. This is where many afternoon teas fail the test, and Lady Mendl’s passes.
By this point, you’re stuffed, and just when you think you can’t possibly eat another bite, dessert arrives! The sweet courses at Lady Mendl’s demonstrate the same attention to detail as everything that came before, providing a perfect conclusion to an exceptional tea service.
Additionally, you can’t have afternoon tea without the actual tea. With numerous options to choose from, you might feel overwhelmed. If you’re unsure, the knowledgeable staff will guide you to the perfect pairing for each course. It’s like having a sommelier, but for tea!

For anyone seeking an exceptional afternoon tea in New York City, Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon should be at the top of your list. What makes this afternoon tea experience special is its commitment and consistency to creating an authentic experience. Unlike many other tea services in Manhattan that cut corners or modernize too much, Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon stays true to the essence of what makes afternoon tea so special. Every aspect has been thoughtfully considered.
It held the top spot on my NYC afternoon tea list for years, until I learned about Brooklyn High Low. However, if you want to stay in Manhattan and want a proper afternoon tea service with real clotted cream, then it’s Lady Mendl’s.
