The energy was electric at Racket, the Chelsea music hall, as UPSAHL took the stage for a highly anticipated performance. With hundreds of thousands of followers across social media, the alt-pop sensation has a dedicated fan base who were eager to hear her live. While waiting for her to come onstage, I even heard some people in the crowd say they flew in from Los Angeles specifically for this show!
For those unfamiliar with UPSAHL, she’s a Phoenix native who has been making waves in the indie alternative scene for years. I first learned about her through her tour that was being advertised on TikTok and promptly applied to photograph her show when she came to NYC. Part of my concert photography process is to peruse the internet looking for talent in order to build up my live events portfolio.
The singer burst onto the stage with her band and showcased her powerful vocals, talented guitar playing, and fierce attitude. She kept the energy high all night which had the crowd jumping and dancing. UPSAHL’s talent as a songwriter was on full display, and her lyrics had the crowd singing along the whole time.
Throughout the night, UPSAHL was a commanding presence on stage. She exuded confidence and charisma, and her band jammed in sync with her. The singer’s energy was infectious, and the crowd was fully engaged from start to finish. With the way the stage is set up, she was able to really get in her fans’ faces where they would all sing along together.
This was my first time photographing at a venue with an unconventional “photo pit”. Typically, the photo pit is in the front of the stage, but this one was on the side in front of the soundboard.
To learn how to break into concert photography I wrote tips on how to get started and you can read what camera gear I use for concerts.
