The holidays are here, which means you’re looking for the perfect stocking stuffers for photographers. Let’s be real, gifting your photography friend can be difficult. Shopping for other people is already hard enough, and sometimes shopping for photographers, whether they’re just starting out or are professionals, can be even harder. They only care about one thing: acquiring more camera gear! Gear acquisition syndrome (GAS) is a real thing.
This may or may not be a compilation of what I want my friends to get me this holiday season. While a cup shaped like a lens might be cool, these stocking stuffers for photographers are both thoughtful and practical.
For the Amateur & Professional Photographers
Fast reading and writing SD card
It’s incredible how much storage can be packed into a small chip these days. We can never have enough memory cards. Literally. We’re always forgetting these, and we ALWAYS need more space! That being said, it can’t be just any SD card. It has to read and write fast, 250/mbs minimum. One of the most frustrating feelings is using your camera in burst mode to capture something at high speeds, such as a flying bird or THE moment at a proposal or wedding, only to have to wait for the card to write the data.
External Hard Drives
Storage and backups are absolutely critical. If you’re shooting in RAW or recording video, space will be eaten up like crazy. There are two different types of external hard drives that you can get, HDD or SSD. HDD is standard and is good enough for people just starting out. An SSD external hard drive is way better than an HDD in many ways. It’s faster, safer, and lighter. That being said, they are on the pricier side as a gift.

Carrying the Gear
I’ll be the first to tell you that carrying camera gear is not graceful, and carrying it also makes you a target out on the street. Gear is worth thousands of dollars, so it’s important to be inconspicuous and nimble. I’m always trying to travel compactly, so I’ve found the following backpack to be the perfect size for me at this time. I’ve included a short review of it below to help you with your decision.
For the Mobile Photographer
Controversial topic: phones these days are better than cameras. Mobile photography is on the rise. The technical ability of these compact computers is advancing at lightning speed. For the everyday person who just needs something in the palm of their hand, these accessories can help you produce epic and cinematic quality from your phone. As a photographer, I won’t be switching over anytime soon, but I do most of my recording on my phone.

Editing Software
Post-processing is a critical component of most photographers’ workflow. 90% of digital photography these days is edited with some sort of software. There are purists out there who don’t believe in using software to post-process, but as for the rest of us, we edit on the computer after we snap a picture.

I am a true believer in lifelong learning. These courses are what helped me to understand the basics of this medium and create a workflow both in-camera and post-processing.
