As someone who’s sampled my way through most afternoon tea spots in NYC, all of them require a reservation. However, if you’ve been searching for afternoon tea in NYC without a reservation, the Morgan Library café in Midtown Manhattan is a spot to add to your dining list. It just so happens to be inside a library built for one of the most powerful men in American history.
What is the Morgan Library Café?

Most people know JP Morgan from the name on their bank account, but few know that the man himself had his own private library. Oh, to be a captain of industry! Today, the Morgan Library & Museum is a public institution on Madison Avenue, and its café is open to anyone. Whether or not you’re visiting the museum, you don’t need to pay museum admission. Just head straight to the back, and there you’ll find the cafe.
How Much Does Afternoon Tea at the Morgan Library cost?
The initial appeal to have afternoon tea here was its price point. Less than a year ago, it cost $66 serving two, so $33 per person, which was a steal for NYC prices. Now, the afternoon tea currently runs $88, which breaks down to $44 per person. It is still on the reasonable end for afternoon tea in NYC. Knowing what it cost not too long ago, the price hike stings a little.
What’s included in the Morgan Library’s Afternoon Tea?

The spread follows a classic three-tier setup. On the bottom, a selection of finger sandwiches. The standout to me is the cornbread and prosciutto. The middle tier holds cranberry-orange scones served with cream and jam. The scones are good, but the cream is thin. I don’t think it’s clotted, so that was a miss for me.
The top tier looks a bit whimsical, with macarons, an opera cake, and grapes dusted with edible glitter. Each person can select a pairing from Harney & Sons teas. The selections include Earl Grey, Japanese Sencha, Turmeric Ginger, Chamomile, English Breakfast, Assam, and Paris Mint. I went with the Paris Mint.
Do You Need a Reservation for Afternoon Tea at the Morgan Library?

Dining without reservations in NYC is hard to find these days, so it’s great to be able to just walk in here. The Morgan Library café is a full-service restaurant, so you can order à la carte off the menu, too. Something I noticed after my afternoon tea setup came to my table was that other people surrounding me were looking at the spread and then ordering it for themselves. Overall, the Morgan Library and Museum is worth it for a spontaneous afternoon where you want to feel a little fancy without planning.
