The Art of Capturing Timeless Baptism Photos

Driving out to Long Island from New York City can feel like a retreat in itself. When that trip leads to photographing a baby’s baptism and the subsequent celebration, it becomes even more meaningful.
As a photographer in NYC, I’ve had the privilege of capturing many special events for families, like engagement parties, and I’ve learned a few things along the way about capturing candid emotions and memorializing the day.
How Do You Photograph a Baptism Ceremony?
If possible, arrive a little early and scope out the space before the ceremony begins. Notice where the light falls, which backgrounds stand out, and which angles will let you move naturally without distracting from the moment. This will not only help you capture stunning images, but it will also ensure that you are prepared when it’s time to start taking pictures.
During the baptism, watch for the reactions on the family’s faces, not just the baby’s. The parents, godparents, and grandparents often carry just as much visible joy, and those candid expressions tell the story as much as the blessing itself.
Afterward, take time to photograph the family together. Having formal pictures is always something to include, even when taking a “photojournalistic” approach. Be sure to also take shots of any special keepsakes from the day. These small details will add meaning and context to the photographs for years to come.
Do You Need Flash Photography Inside a Church?
Every church is different. Some allow flash, while others don’t. If the light is low, open up your aperture and raise your ISO before turning to flash.
What photos should you take at a baptism reception?
In addition to the christening ceremony, many families choose to celebrate with a dinner reception afterward. This is a great opportunity to capture more candid, relaxed pictures of the family and the baby as they celebrate and spend time together. Look for natural, spontaneous moments as the family interacts and celebrates the baby’s special day.
Also, when photographing the reception, be sure to capture the décor and details of the event, including the table settings and centerpieces. Since this is a more relaxed setting, using a stobe light to combat indoor darkness is more acceptable.
Photographing a baby’s christening and the dinner reception that follows is a special and meaningful event. By following these tips and using your creativity, you can capture beautiful, timeless images that the family will cherish for a lifetime.
