Capturing A Hudson River Park Proposal

As a professional photographer, there are few things more fulfilling than being able to capture the special moments in people’s lives. Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph the proposal of one of my first friends in the “real world” when I used to work in corporate, which was a full-circle moment for me.

The groom-to-be, Sebastian, reached out to me a couple of months before his planned proposal in Hudson River Park. As part of my proposal photography process, I always schedule a walkthrough with my clients before the actual day to ensure that we’re on the same page. Even clients who initially thought a walkthrough was unnecessary have been grateful for it in the end. I insist on this step because I don’t want to miss any special moments.

Sebastian and his girlfriend had moved to Dallas sometime during the pandemic, so our walkthrough ended up being only a couple of hours before the proposal. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on our side, and there was a torrential downpour the weekend of the proposal. I’ve experienced all sorts of weather, but this was the first time that the weather didn’t cooperate with my clients.

Originally, Sebastian planned to surprise his girlfriend (she didn’t know he was in NYC) and propose outdoors at one of the piers in Hudson River Park. However, since both of them were in the city only for the weekend, the proposal ended up happening in a restaurant across the street from his fiancee’s old apartment, where they shared their first kiss. It turned out to be a much more sentimental spot!
